In much of Latin America, a notario is a high-ranking legal professional. In Arizona, a notary public verifies signatures, and that is all. The gap between those two meanings costs families thousands of dollars every year, mostly in immigration cases, where someone with a stamp and an office promises to fix papers they have no license to touch.
Here is the protection built into Arizona: people who prepare legal documents for the public without an attorney must be certified by the Arizona Supreme Court as legal document preparers. We carry a certificate number you can verify on the court's own website. Mine is AZCLDP No. 82291, and I put it on everything.
A few honest tells. Anyone who guarantees an immigration outcome is lying. Anyone who tells you not to talk to a lawyer is protecting themselves, not you. And anyone doing legal paperwork who cannot show you a certificate or a bar number should not be holding your documents.
I prepare documents and certified translations, I show my number, and when your case needs a lawyer, I say so.
